J got his orders today and as my title says, we are headed to Northern Washington. While I am glad that we are staying West Coast (we are from Oregon) I am not terribly excited about rainy Washington. I love my sunny weather and I was sorta looking for forward to a nice and sunny beach. And looks like we are headed for a rainy beach most months out of the year. I should be happy though. J thought that I wanted to be in Washington over California (um...not really) which is why he chose Washington over California. Well I am sure not the only reason why, but part of the reason.
I am really not terribly excited about Washington. And I don't think it's because of where we will be, I think it is more because I am really moving. For a girl that has pretty much lived within 20 miles of the place I was born for my whole entire life, moving for the first time is a little scary. Especially the whole starting over thing. Meeting new people, finding a new job, moving to a new house, new area. SCARY. And we (or rather I) still don't know when we are moving so I can't really prep or start applying for jobs.
On the bright side, I am only 9 hours away from home, and only 5 hours away from three of my very good friends. And it looks like where we will be living is kind of a vacation spot during the summer, maybe I can convince my friends to come out and see me!!!
So the questions that I am putting out there to all your verteren PCS'ers out there is: How to you research a new city that you are moving to? I am a partially "fly by the seat of my pants" kind of girl, and partially "over analyze everything" kind of girl.... GREAT combo. Plan, plan, plan, then wing it is basically what happens.

I grew up in a military family, so I've moved around a lot, but moving to Charleston was the first move on my own, and the first time I've been away from my family permanently. It's actually been a great experience for us, overall. When he first got his orders, I went online to the base's official website and downloaded an info. packet on the base and the area. It was helpful in that it contained a lot of phone numbers, a map of the base and the surrounding area, etc. When you get to the area, check out your local Fleet and Family Support Center. They have a lot of resources, including listings for jobs and volunteer opportunities. It's a good place to start at least.
As someone who's moved a lot, my biggest piece of advice is to just be open to your new area. Each place can offer a lot to do and see and experience, if you allow it to! It is what you make of it. :) Before joining the military, my husband lived in the same small town for his whole life. I was so nervous for him, but he actually loves it here, and although he misses home at times, we are only about 12 hours away, so we're able to visit when he has time off!
yay! How exciting that you know where you're going! My cousin's hubby is in the navy and they are stationed in Bremerton, WA. She feels the same way you do about the sunshine. Thats really her biggest problem with living there (she grew up in cali and arizona and is used to the sun!). But other than the gloomy weather all the time she loves it and they are very happy there! As for picking Wa over Ca, well that must be a man thing cause every woman would choose San Diego over Wa! Lol. But I'm sure it will work out great for you guys. As long as you have each other thats all that matters. :) Good luck!
Thanks Ladies. I appreciate the advice! I am looking forward to seeing the new sites and finding fun things to do. It looks like there should be a lot of outdoor activities that we can do, especially hiking! I will get over the weather.... My hair is gonna be super curly all the time!!! I will check out the bases official site. Thanks for the hints! =)
Originally I told the hubs that I didn't really want to go to San Diego. His aunt lived there with her hubs who was a Marine and she mainly talked about how scared she was living there. She didn't feel safe. And I don't want to live somewhere and be scared all the time so I didn't really want to go there. Then after I told him this I heard so many amazing things about the area and even his Auntie told me, yes where they lived was a little scary but she LOVED San Diego. And apparently I didn't tell J that I changed my mind. Oops!!! Oh well. We will go somewhere new in a few years anyway. Fingers crossed for somewhere sunny!
I love Washington!!! Girl, be glad you are not going to El Paso, TX or something crazy like that. I have never PCSed, so I really dont have any advice, but I am doing the happy dance with ya -:)

thanks!! his "a" school is in pensacola and it's three months long. im thinking about moving down there so he wouldnt have to drive all the way up here every weekend. but im not sure if it's really worth it for that short of time. we'll figure something out. :D
AND you will be close(ish) to ME!!!!!
Close-ish!!! Sorta....It's actually about the same distance from your house to home and your house to the base.....but we will be close to Seattle!
